Ambelin Kwaymullina, The Crow and the Waterhole (2007)

This is a morality tale about a crow discovering she really is brave, faithful, kind and wise. The story itself is sweet enough, and with enough repetition that I think a beginning reader would enjoy it.

What sets the book apart is the excellent illustrations, in very bold colours. I cannot tell from the bibliographic information who did the illustrations - it says the design was by Tracey Gibbs, which sounds like she may be a professional illustrator. Certainly a cut above the usual illustrations in small print books. This is really almost a coffee table book.
