Makes it tricky for mixed-race authors too (the photo thing). I used to work at a think tank where they told me to compile a list of POCs in state legislatures--some other orgs & academics had made such lists, but a lot of the time they were compiled based solely on last names (which could be misleading depending on married names, mixed backgrounds, etc.) or by looking at photos, which... yeah. Sometimes works but when it doesn't work so well it just gets really tricky!
(But yeah, I was trying to figure out the other day if an author was white or not & I concluded that she may be white & just like you said, no one mentions it.)
