Your review of Vexy Thing intrigued me! I see Duke University Press published it; it sounds like you found it really readable? I have sometimes tried to read academic books that were pretty hard going on a prose level. I started the introduction (available free on the Duke University Press site) and it looks like Perry deliberately writes (at least in places) pretty directly and clearly, with some short sentences mixed in with the long ones. :-)
