It may not be a common form in American comics, but it is certainly not unheard of in the rest of the world. Japanese comics (manga) are written by one person (or occasionally a writer/artist team) and run for years on one story. There are some that have been going since the '70s. Manga can cover any type of story you can imagine. There are superhero manga (though not the same type of superhero stories as American comics) and there are slice of life manga and sci-fi and fantasy and gag manga and mysteries and soap operas and romance and everything under the sun, and target ages vary from elementary school students to adults.

If you like that long-running single-author format, you should try picking up some manga. There's a ton of it available in English these days.
