A few months ago I wrote up a big MetaFilter post about Dalip Singh Saund, the first Asian American elected to the US Congress.
opusculasedfera's post this week that mentioned a book by Shashi Tharoor, an Indian politician, reminded me that I should mention Saund's autobiography here!
Congressman From India (1960) is available to read for free online and I found it fascinating. It covers his early life, his trip to the US, his studies and the development of his political interests, his activism and work in the judiciary, his campaign for the House of Representatives, the start of that job, and his 1957 goodwill tour abroad. His voice is sometimes humble, sometimes confident, and pretty upbeat. It's worth dipping into!
