I had no idea before I read the two books that Truth was actually from the North, which made me see how then and now, it's all too easy to categorize all ex-slaves as Southern ex-slaves and not look any deeper at each person's real, particular background.

Painter's book has a really good section on the "Ain't I a Woman?" speech, since the most famous version of it was published years later and differs quite a lot from the version reported right afterward.
