I have it on my list to read, but idk how well I will be able to take it. I have a very close friend who was totally fucked up by parents like this and I couldn't help but read the WSJ article with him in mind.
I think that many, many parents who are abusive (whether verbally, emotionally, and/or physically) think they have their children's best interests at heart and their children will know that they love them despite what they're saying/doing. There's nothing uniquely Chinese to that mindset.
