While I've not read Blonde Roots, the thing that's always struck me about Prachett's world is his solid characterization-- even if you roll your eyes at some of the worldbuilding/jokes, you're invested in Carrot or Vimes or Granny Weatherwax, and that for me gives it enough heart to be more than a flat-out satire, even in the books which are weakest.

You haven't mentioned characterization and the tags are failing me on [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's reviews-- I can find two other books of hers, but not this one-- do you think that might be it? Because I can't get through a book if the characters aren't likeable/believable enough a lot of times, though some people can quite easily, and I'm wondering if that might be a factor.
