Oh same, I didn't like When Fox is a Thousand at all... I think it was how distant the Fox lady was, and that the romance didn't work with me. (Not because I have anything against lesbian romance, but because I didn't think they actually had any chemistry with each other whatsoever.) But I found the characters far, far more likable in Salt Fish Girl, the mythology must better incorporated, and I actually liked the romance this time around. =D And also Salt Fish Girl felt more innovative. There was all sorts of fun concepts in the novel that Lai played around with, and it worked, imo.
