Colonial history is SCARY! Especially since I'd had this misconception that because Canadian history happened LATER than Latin American history, that Canadian history would be somehow less cruel to the native peoples. Of course, it doesn't help that I know way more about the Maya and Aztec and the so-called Five Civilized Tribes of the Southeastern US, which have different sorts of first contact stories than people in other areas.
