The Hugo Awards are a major SFF award, distinctive for being fan-driven: fans nominate works for the award, and fans have the final vote on the award. "Fan" is defined as "anyone who springs $50 for a ChiCon 2012 supporting membership before January 31st". ([livejournal.com profile] theferret summarizes why one might want to become a Hugo voter: a chance to boost the career of your favorite creators, and ebooks of the works on the final ballot.) Nominations for the Hugo ballot are currently open; nominations are due March 11.

Some have expressed interest in knowing what poc-created works and which poc SFF professionals and fans are eligible for nomination: this is the post! Rec and discuss your favorite works below (or, alternatively, just name poc-created works that are eligible, whether or not you are actively recommending them); I'll pull the recs up into the main post. And yes, go ahead and rec works or people for the non-book-related categories, if you wish. Just make sure that the people or creators that you are nominating are chromatic/non-white/people of color.

(And please feel free to signal-boost this around! Crowd-sourcing is good!)

K.M. Ruiz's novel Mind Storm is eligible and awesome (and I still need to write up my review).

A. Lee Martinez's novel Chasing the Moon is eligible, but I haven't read it yet.

I'm sure more things will occur to me.

The Kingdom of the Gods, by N. K. Jemisin is eligible for Best Novel; it was really good, and took the series a direction I did not expect.

Aliette de Bodard's Harbinger of the Storm and Master of the House of Darts should be eligible for Best Novel as well; I haven't read them (yet) but the first book in the series (Servant of the Underworld) was fascinating and very well-written.

And I've never quite understood how they count for the Campbell Award -- and given that it focuses on amount paid for work, maybe I just can't know for sure who's eligible? -- but Aliette de Bodard might be eligible for that too. . .

Ditto on Zen's stories (the House of Aunts is awesome!)

Ken Liu's stuff is brilliant and deserves to be on awards list: my favourites this year were "The Paper Menagerie" in F&SF: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCcQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpodcastle.org%2F2011%2F07%2F12%2Fpodcastle-165-the-paper-menagerie%2F&ei=AxMjT4WGAYfKhAeq-JndBA&usg=AFQjCNFF8uN9pCQunGMTXWXwra_U0VWErw

And his novella "The Man Who Ended History: a Documentary" is the single most brilliant and heartbreaking thing I read last year. http://kenliu.name/binary/liu_the_man_who_ended_history.pdf

Rochita Loenen-Ruiz's short story "Return to Paraiso", in the last issue of ROF, is also pretty good (couldn't find a copy online).

I've been really behind on reading novels, though, so can't help there...

Thanks to you, Charles, for mentioning three of my eligible stories! I much appreciate that.

I had eight stories published in 2011, a very good year for my short fiction (plus one essay and two reprints). The story I'm happiest with is "Black Betty," which is up at Crossed Genres. The story I'm proudest of is "Something More," which appeared in the WisCon Guest of Honor book Something More and More published by Aqueduct Press. I thought writing that story would kill me, but it didn't. I had a huge amount of help from my editor and from others, and I hope it does something of what I want it to do. Still available from Aqueduct if anyone wants to order and read it.

I'm honored that my work is noticed.

And I notice Charles Tan (no relation) had a story in Philippine Speculative Fiction VI, "The Bookshelves of Ms. Go," (edited by Nikki Alfar and Kate Aton-Osias).

The Campbell award section is out-of-date. My understanding is Amal El-Mohtar, Shweta Narayan, Saladin Ahmed are no longer eligible (last year was their second year). A few off-hand I can see are eligible are Nicky Drayden, E. Lily Yu and Silvia Moreno-Garcia. That's going by this list:

I edited several anthologies (and translated some stories for them) and I can think of a few writers who are POC (most of these folks are also international writers).

Here goes:

"The Seeder From the Stars," by Julio Toro San Martin. Historical Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Ahuizotl" by Nelly Geraldine Garcia-Rosas. Historical Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"What Hides and What Returns" by Bryan Thao Worra. Historical Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"City of Witches" by Regina Allen. Historical Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles

"People Are Reading What You Are Writing" by Luso Mnthali. Future Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Iron Footfalls" by Julio Toron San Martin.Future Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Tloque Nahuaque" by Nelly Geraldine Garcia-Rosas. Future Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Lottie Versus the Moon Hopper" by Pamela Rentz. Future Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"The Last Man Standing" by Ezeiyoke Chukwunonso. Future Lovecraft. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles

"Desideratum" by Gina Flores. Candle in the Attic Window. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"In His Arms in the Attic" by Alexis Brooks de Vita. Candle in the Attic Window. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Hitomi" by Nelly Geraldine Garcia-Rosas. Candle in the Attic Window. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles
"Nine Nights" by T.S. Bazelli. Candle in the Attic Window. Edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles

And here's one from the magazine I publish:

"Tenderfoot" by Daniel Jose Older. Innsmouth Magazine Issue 6.

Anyway, if you don't think POC write Lovecraft you might want to check some of those stories out. :)

Cheers,

Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

I may have missed this one in the list above, or perhaps he isn't eligible for some reason, but it looks like you could add

The Liminal People by Ayize Jama-Everett
Publisher: Small Beer Press (December 13, 2011)

to the list. I haven't read it yet, but he was able to get props from Nalo Hopkinson for one of his book blurbs, so there's that. :-)

Looking a little bit closer...it looks like Jama-Everett self-published the book in 2009, and Small Beer picked it up in 2011, with the ebook coming out in Dec 2011 and the hard copy being released in Jan 2012. Soooo, I dunno about eligibility for 2011, but since it was released as an ebook in 2011 by a publishing house it seems like it would be eligible????? Hi,

great list! A few things I can add:

* Mister Hadj's Sunset Ride is unfortunately not eligible (first publication in 2010, not 2011).
* link for Shipbirth (http://aliettedebodard.com/bibliography/online-fiction/shipbirth/)
* a missing story: Thirty Seconds From Now (http://www.bostonreview.net/BR36.5/john_chu_fiction.php) by John Chu who is Chinese-American
* another missing story: All That Touches the Air (http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/all-that-touches-the-air/) by An Owomoyela
* A Prince of Thirteen Days is a novelette, not a short story (word count: 9661)
* another missing story: Safe Empathy (http://dailysciencefiction.com/hither-and-yon/magic-realism/ken-liu/safe-empathy) by Ken Liu (he might not want this flash story to be promoted for awards, it's not on the Hugo list on his website even though it seems to be eligible)
* to the best of my knowledge, Eric Del Carlo is white (if he isn't, I need to know to tag his stories correctly on the Expanded Horizons website and in my review archives!)

Thank you for the list!! I'm reviewing fiction related to underrepresented groups (which is a bit wider than PoC/chromatic) on my website (http://www.prezzey.net) and this list helped me to find stuff I'd have missed otherwise! I can boost the signal :]

BTW – I see you've deleted some stories because the authors were deemed not to be PoC, do you have a list of those somewhere? The authors might still qualify as underrepresented for my purposes. (Eastern European white people, etc.)

Two books by the immensely popular webcomic, Wayward Sons: Legends.

Wayward Sons: Legends Volume One
Wayward Sons: Legends Volume Two

The story centers around a group of ancient aliens who crash-land on earth near while pursuing a group of escaped prisoners they were transporting.  The accident that caused their crash, imbued both groups with fantastic abilities and near immortality.  As each group wage war on the other, the marooned space travelers eventually become the basis for all of our mythologies, fairy tales and legends through every culture in human history.

Both were published in 2011.

Here's one short story:

The Lake (http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/09/the-lake) by Tananarive Due, from The Monster's Corner anthology (2011), free reprint on tor.com.

And for best pro artist, PoC artists from tor.com:

* Yuko Shimizu (http://www.yukoart.com)
* Kekai Kotaki (http://www.tor.com/bios/artists/kekai-kotaki)
* Victo Ngai (http://www.tor.com/galleries/victo-ngai#thumbs)
* Jillian Tamaki (http://www.tor.com/galleries/jillian-tamaki#thumbs)

There are also a few other artists who might or might not qualify as PoC, I'm unsure (I'm not from the US and we categorize differently). Goni Montes (http://www.goniart.com/) and Jason Ramirez (http://www.tor.com/galleries/jason-ramirez#thumbs) seem to be Latino. Ana Juan (http://www.tor.com/galleries/ana-juan#thumbs) is Spanish, but European Spanish. Etc., here is a long list (http://www.tor.com/blogs/2011/12/torcoms-hugo-and-nebula-eligible-stories-2011) if someone from the US is willing to go through it.
