The Hugo Awards are a major SFF award, distinctive for being fan-driven: fans nominate works for the award, and fans have the final vote on the award. "Fan" is defined as "anyone who springs $50 for a ChiCon 2012 supporting membership before January 31st". ([livejournal.com profile] theferret summarizes why one might want to become a Hugo voter: a chance to boost the career of your favorite creators, and ebooks of the works on the final ballot.) Nominations for the Hugo ballot are currently open; nominations are due March 11.

Some have expressed interest in knowing what poc-created works and which poc SFF professionals and fans are eligible for nomination: this is the post! Rec and discuss your favorite works below (or, alternatively, just name poc-created works that are eligible, whether or not you are actively recommending them); I'll pull the recs up into the main post. And yes, go ahead and rec works or people for the non-book-related categories, if you wish. Just make sure that the people or creators that you are nominating are chromatic/non-white/people of color.

(And please feel free to signal-boost this around! Crowd-sourcing is good!)

I'd love to see Stephanie Pui-Mun Law up for Fan Artist (I don't think she's eligible for Pro Artist this year but I'm happy to be corrected if I missed something!). And Mark Oshiro, of markwatches/markreads, should be eligible for fanwriter.

Oh, and under novel--Michelle Sagara's Cast in Ruin and (published as Michelle West) House Name should be eligible. Which reminds me that I need to actually read them; I am tragically behind on Michelle's stuff.

Thanks!

BTW, by my count Ghostweight comes in at 7,956 words, which puts it in the novelette category, not short story.

Could be--or could be that, like Dumas, he has African heritage and I just don't know about it! I've never heard of him before. I am familiar with Unamuno and am pretty sure he IDed as white, but I'm open to correction on that point too. I certainly don't feel qualified to be making determinations--particularly regarding whether some of the Central European authors I flagged below "count."

True!

I'm also checking right now if the story was published previously in French, and double-checking if the Hugo eligibility means "first published in 2011" or "first published in English in 2011."

edit: Yup, first year available in English is eligible.

It's first year in English, yeah. And for the most part I think that's a great rule. Most Hugo voters are English-speaking, after all; we shouldn't render stories de facto ineligible just because it takes them a year or two to come out in translation. But I have to admit I'm not all that comfortable applying it to things like "The Man Who Buried Himself," which was originally published in 1908. I dunno. I like my Hugo votes and noms going to authors who are still alive to appreciate it, you know?

Uh, and on further investigation "The Man Who Buried Himself" has a 2008 English translation listed in Worldcat, so it's not eligible anyway. But the same thoughts mostly apply to The Red Loaf (originally published 1951).

The Navidad Incident: The Downfall of Matias Guili: As far as I can tell, this is actually a novel, coming out in 2012 from Haikasoru. Makes sense! I have no particular opinion either way (well, except about Unamuno, as noted above--but as also noted, the 2008 translation of that story makes that opinion irrelevant).
