#21: House Divided by Raul Ramos y Sanchez
House Divided is a sequel to Ramos y Sanchez's last book, America Libre. Set in the very, very near future, racial tensions and a series of unfortunate events lead to the mass interment of Latino Americans. You really need to read America Libre before you read this one.
If I had to choose one word to describe this book, I would use "gripping." It's a thrilling story. The first book had to spend time setting up events, but House Divided gets into the action and never lets up.
But don't let me make you think that this is a brainless thriller. It's a very intelligent, thoughtful book. The character, even characters we don't like, are allowed to feel like real people. Ramos y Sanchez manages to deliver an exciting book that still features moral dilemmas at the center: Who is the enemy? How far do the ends justify the means?
I'm on pins and needles for the final book in the series. I can't imagine how things will ever be resolved.
