So I again found myself bored in a library..and lo there was another Shaun Tan book I hadn't read yet!
8: Shaun Tan: Tales from Outer Suburbia
This is book of illustrated short stories, but in some cases the illustrations outnumber the text pages, and in all cases they're beautifully done and an integral part of the story. I don't usually like short stories (especially very short stories, which many of these are) but I still really enjoyed this book. Again we have ideas of place and identity filtered through a surreal lens of fantasy but there's also some political commentary and just.. stories, all turning the sorts of suburb where I live(*) into a place of strange, haunting magical experiences and the unexpected.
(*)Not that you have to live in the northern suburbs of Perth Western Australia to enjoy this book. But it's definitely an added bonus :D
