bell hooks' 'All About Love' is the kind of book I wish I could read with a highlighter. I admit I felt vaguely embarrassed to be reading it at first – what is effectively a self-help book – but I found it an engaging and illuminating read.

'All About Love' talks about love as an action and a choice. It speaks not just of romantic relationships but of the familial, of friendships, of one's relationship to strangers and the world in general. The most valuable section for me was the one on community and friendship – it's certainly got the most little pieces of paper marking pages – because it's the one most applicable for me at this time. I imagine other parts will resonate more for other people, or for me at different times.

I think I got this out of the library once, under the title "Communion." I was pretty annoyed that I didn't have time to read it before the due date. Clearly I should check it out again!

Everything I've ever read by bell hooks has made me want a highlighter. All right, it's made me want to use up a highlighter. I've heard her speak live a couple of times: never miss a chance.
